Judge David Newell was elected to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on November 4, 2014.
His current term ends on December 31, 2020, and he is running for re-election for the Place 9 judge of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. He is on the ballot in the Republican primary on March 3, 2020.

David now serves on the committee that helps create and ultimately grades the board certification exam in Criminal Appellate Law.

David serves as Co-Course Director for the Annual Robert O. Dawson Conference on Criminal Appeals put on by the University of Texas School of Law Continuing Legal Education Department. He has presented on a wide variety of legal and ethical topics for the Texas Center for the Judiciary, Texas Association of Appellate Court Attorneys, Texas District and County Attorney's Association, Texas Criminal Defense Lawyer's Association, Texas Municipal Courts Education Center, and the National Rifle Association.
